Great post. I'll be sure to email this one around to everyone at Newfangled - http://www.newfangled.com -(where I work). Thanks! -CB

My favorite post of yours yet Brian, and I do read them all.

I'm going to pull my hair out if one more person claims press releases are dead. Optimized releases sent through search engines have enormous strategic online value.

Sheesh... Done venting and thanks Brian. VB

Press release are not the best way to engage the media, in my experience. Relationships with reporters, great customized pitches, and exclusives supersede spam and wire services. I do see press releases as significant SEO vehicles with direct stakeholder impact.

    Great post, Brian.

I like your treatment of the customer relationship. It is not owned by either side and is built on two way communications.

    Thanks Christopher, I appreciate it.

OnlinePRGuy, thank you very much, that means a lot. I absolutely agree about press releases!

Geoff, exactly. Press releases are merely tools to carry information from the company to specific groups of people optimized for a variety of channels and formats.

YChange, thank you. Relationships are something that both sides work at.

"But all of this is simply based on listening, respect, and value as a way of instilling trust."

Ahh...so refreshing to see a post that gets above the dogma and focuses on the value that social media and the two-way web really brings. So many bloggers are taking a super-aggro, black-and-white view on this and it's neither realistic nor helpful. It's great to see a thoughtful, reasoned analysis. Thanks.

Great post! Such clarity! Considering that in a recent PR News survey, of 900 professional communications respondents -- that only 24% ever engage on social networking sites and that 60% never spend time on blogs, your post should be in the 'must read' category for all PR professionals. It also would make ideal reading for Paulson and Bernake as to "authenticity and transparency" when they came asking for the $700 billion 'bailout' plan.
